Safer school roads and FIFO hub for Hervey Bay residents

Hervey Bay families will benefit from safer travel and increased employment opportunities thanks to a much needed upgrade to 3 local intersections courtesy of funding from the Newman LNP Government’s Royalties for the Regions program.

LNP Member for Hervey Bay, Ted Sorensen said the funding would provide $26 million in critical upgrades to intersections that had become increasingly dangerous, as well as $525,000 for the Fraser Coast fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) hub.

“Over the past three years the Royalties for the Regions program has made strong inroads into reversing Labor’s neglect of rural and regional Queenslanders,” Mr Sorensen said.

“Labor had no plan to look after Queensland’s regions and they still don’t.  The Hervey Bay region continues to grow and prosper, and with that growth several of our key road intersections have felt the pressure.  The intersection upgrades will mean a safer trip to school and work for local families and reduce the likelihood that our roads will be cut during bad weather.”

“These intersections have been bursting at the seams and with our region set for continued growth, this funding will improve the liveability and safety of our community.”

$26 million will be spent to upgrade the following intersections:

  • Urraween/Hervey Bay Maryborough Road intersection
  • Hervey Bay/Maryborough and Pialba/Burrum Heads Roads Intersection
  • Scrub Hill Road / Wide Bay Drive / Burrum Heads Road intersection.

“These upgrades will mean safer passage and accessibility for families travelling through these intersections, and also will strengthen our connectivity with our emerging communities.

Mr Sorensen said funding for the Fraser Coast fly-in-fly-out hub will make it easier for FIFO workers in the community and provide greater employment opportunites for our residents.

“The ‘FIFO Hub' at the Fraser Coast Airport will provide customised FIFO facilities including dedicated express check in and handling facilities for charters and baggage, pre-boarding tests (drug and alcohol), staff briefings and an onsite ‘FIFO Family’ Community area,” he said.

“The project will cater for current demand and forecast growth, particularly from resource sector FIFO operations and is critical to addressing fatigue and safety management of workers and the wellbeing of their families.

“Funding for our FIFO hub is a fantastic outcome as well as it will enable safer and sustainable transport options for local residents, business people, and our tourism industry.

“This facility will support those in the community using air travel, but will also support the significant population growth that our region has been experiencing.

“It gives people a lifestyle choice in that it allows them to live in an area like the Fraser Coast and still be able to travel to-and-from their work place, wherever that may be in the State.”

The announcement for Hervey Bay follows a major announcement from the Newman LNP government earlier that a further $500 million over 4 years would be invested in the Royalties to the Regions program from the Strong Choices plan.
