Queensland is bracing for the Palaszczuk Labor Government’s new waste tax to begin smashing small businesses and households from July 1.

LNP Leader Deb Frecklington said Annastacia Palaszczuk’s greedy tax would lead to Queenslanders forking out $75 per tonne of waste at the dump – ripping $1.2 billion from the economy over the next three years.

“Small businesses everywhere in Queensland will be smashed by Labor’s waste tax,” Ms Frecklington said.

“The construction industry will be hardest hit, but even fish and chips shops and mechanics will be slugged.

“Labor’s waste tax means it will cost businesses more to get rid of their waste and they will have no choice but to pass the cost on to customers.

“Labor’s waste tax is toxic for business, it will destroy jobs and squeeze household budgets.

“For Annastacia Palaszczuk to say the waste tax will have no direct impact on Queenslanders is a complete lie.

“Master Builders forecast the waste levy will add $1,500 to the cost of a new home at a time when Queenslanders are struggling to get a foothold in the property market.

“The LNP has guaranteed no new taxes to give businesses certainty and give households relief.”

LNP Shadow Environment Minister David Crisafulli called on the Palaszczuk Labor Government to abandon the tax grab before it comes into force on July 1.

“The LNP is fighting this tax in Parliament with a disallowance motion because it’s been a con job from the start,” Mr Crisafulli said.

“Labor’s excuse for the tax was to fix an interstate dumping issue at Ipswich, but it will deliver a hammer blow to communities and councils in every corner of this state.

“This isn’t a waste strategy – it’s a revenue strategy.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk should police the current laws to stop New South Wales’ waste coming across the border, not impose a statewide tax.

“The State Government has slugged Queenslanders with nine new taxes and the waste tax is the biggest tax of the lot.

“When Labor run out of money they come after yours.”
