Hervey Bay families have been encouraged to ‘get a head start’ on their Get in the Game applications, with new rounds of the Newman Government’s flagship grassroots sport funding program to open next month.

Both Get Going and Get Playing opens  on the 1 July and Get Started opens on 15 July, with $21.5 million for the three programs set down in the 2014-15 State Budget.

Member for Hervey Bay Ted Sorensen said the initiative was successfully lowering the cost of living for Queensland families as promised at the election.

“Get in the Game has been a resounding success in Hervey Bay with children and families taking their share of the almost 54,000 Get Started vouchers issued state-wide to help children with club registrations,” Ted said.

“Under the first three rounds of Get Started 26 per cent of vouchers were issued to children who had not played club sport before – which demonstrates just how tough some families are doing it.

“While Labor sat back and let kids miss out because of the expense, our plan is delivering a brighter future with more kids playing sport and getting healthy.

“This initiative has also been hugely supportive of local sport and recreation clubs, with nearly $7 million distributed to clubs for equipment and training under the Get Going program and more than $14 million paid for infrastructure projects under Get Playing.

“I expect we’ll receive another big response for all three programs and I encourage all eligible families and sport and recreation clubs to seek support for their planned activities and facilities.”

Minister for Recreation and Sport Steve Dickson said the Queensland Government was keen to encourage more Queenslanders to get involved in sport and recreation.

“We made an election commitment to get more young Queenslanders involved in recreation and sport, and we are delivering through this highly successful program,” Mr Dickson said.
