Demand for Get Started vouchers remains strong

Queensland families are now finding it easier to get active, thanks to the Newman Government’s Get Started program.

Get Started provides kids who can least afford, or may otherwise benefit from joining a sport or recreation club with vouchers of up to $150 to help with club membership and/or participation fees.

Ted Sorensen, Member for Hervey Bay said the latest round of the Get Started program would help more than 13,500 children and young people join a sport or recreation club state-wide.”

“Round four of Get Started has received a great response, with demand similar to that of last year’s corresponding round,” he said.  “More than 38 per cent of applicants who received a voucher said they had not played club

sport previously, which is exactly what we’re trying to achieve through this program—to increase participation,” Mr Sorensen said.

“It is particularly pleasing that this latest round has seen 308 vouchers issued in Hervey Bay.”

Recreation and Sport Minister Steve Dickson said the Queensland Government was keen to encourage more Queenslanders to get involved in sport and recreation.

“Over the last two years, more than 65,000 vouchers Get Started have been issued, and more than 70 per cent have gone to Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card holders, which is where assistance is needed most” Mr Dickson said.

“We have also received an enormous response from clubs with more than 3500 clubs now  registered with the program, and athletics, gymnastics, swimming and rugby league clubs have proven the most popular under this round” he said.

“We made an election commitment to get more young Queenslanders involved in recreation and sport, and we are delivering through this highly successful program.”

“Round five opens in February next year I strongly encourage all Queensland sport and recreation clubs to get involved,” he said.

Successful applicants must ensure vouchers are redeemed at a Get Started registered clubs by 15 November 2014. Registered clubs must redeem the vouchers by 30 November 2014.
